Gurmaan was born and raised in Vancouver, and now is attending medical school at the University of British Columbia. In May 2022, he completed is undergraduate honours degree in Cellular, Anatomical, and Physiological Sciences at UBC. He has a black belt in Taekwondo and is currently training to get into amateur boxing. When not at the gym, you will usually find Gurmaan at a comedy club (sometimes performing), doing homeless outreach, or doing research in front of his laptop.
Gurmaan co-hosts a radio show called ‘Research Review’ on CiTR-FM (https://www.citr.ca/radio/research-review/), the official student-run radio station at UBC. Research Review features a different UBC-affiliated researcher each week, as the show endeavours to showcase a broad range of change-makers from a range of unique disciplines. The show highlights cutting-edge work in a format that is accessible and engaging for all audiences, whether they are tuning in from Vancouver at 101.9 FM, or anywhere in the world on the website.
In addition to his various hobbies, Gurmaan has extensive research experience. His research experience began at GF Strong Rehabilitation hospital working on the SCIRE, a knowledge translation project for spinal cord injury. He also has wet lab research experience working at BC Children’s Hospital and at UBC, working on his honour’s thesis. Gurmaan also spent a year in UBC’s Co-Op program, working in operating rooms doing pediatric anesthesia research. More recently, Gurmaan’s interests lie in perinatal psychiatry. He spent one year working on the Perinatal Anxiety Research Team and is currently working a systematic review on perinatal opioid use.
Gurmaan also has a passion for tutoring and advising. He is excited to help pre-med students get to the next step in their journey!
